Fuligule et hybride - Tufties, ring-necked and hybrids
Comme vous le devinez, je n'ai pas revu le fuligule à bec cerclé à Úlfarsá. Je compte les oiseaux pour Ebird tous les deux-trois jours là-bas, et pas de trace de ce bonhomme. Quel fût donc ma surprise quand j'ai vu qu'il avait été apercu sur la rivière la semaine dernière. Nous avons deux espèces communes de fuligules en Islande, le fuligule morillon et le fuligule milouinan. Le fuligule à bec cerclé est rare en Islande, mais j'ai observé ce mâle pendant 4 ans sur cette rivière.
As you can guess I have not seen the ring-necked duck again at Úlfarsá. I'm compting birds there every two-three days, but no trace of this little fellow. So what was my surprise when I saw it was seen on the river last week. We have two very common species of the same family, the tufted duck and the greater scaup. The ring-necked duck is a rare duck over here, but I've seen this drake regularly on this river for 4 years.

La dernière photo le montre en compagnie de morillons, assez différents. Mais, ces espèces ne sont pas si différentes que cela d'un point de vue phylogénique, ce qui veut dire qu'elles peuvent se reproduire l'une avec l'autre, et apparaissent alors des hybrides, pas faciles à déterminer, ce qui semble être le problème.
The last shot shows it in the middle of tufties, quite distinctive. But these species are quite close to each other in terms of phylogeny, so you can get hybrids and I think that is the problem as some of them, in certain circunstances, can ressemble a pure ring-necked duck.

Quand j'ai posté la photo suivante sur le site rareté en Islande (cette semaine), de nombreuses personnes étaient confuses. C'est vrai, sur cette photo, la confusion peut être de mise.
When I posted the following picture on the rarity website in Iceland this week, there was some confusion.
Pourtant le mâle et la femelle sur cette photo sont tous les deux des hybrides. Pas de problèmes sur la femelle, on voit de facon très claire les marques blanches sur le bec, qui ne sont pas présentes sur les morillons. En revanche, le mâle vu de face, prête à confusion. Les bandes blanches sur le bec sont marquées, les flancs sont grisâtres et la tête assez foncée. Oui, mais voilà ce qui se passe quand on prend le profil de ce Mr:
However, both the male and the female are hybrids. It is quite clear on the female as we can see the bands on the bill which are absent in tufties. On the contrary, it's not that clear on the male as the head appears quite dark, the mark on the bill are quite pronounced and the side is quite grey. But here is what happens when the same male is seen from the side:
Pas de confusion possible sur celui-ci. Ce message a donc pour but d'avertir nos observateurs de ne pas trop se presser et de bien regarder à deux fois ce qu'il observe et de ne pas trop tirer de conclusion attive sur l'espèce, car un changement de position ou de lumière peut parfois affecter notre jugement.
No possible confusion there. This little post simply want to remind people that we should be careful when it comes to this family and observe quite well what we see. A simple change in light or in the position of the duck might change our mind.
Quelle coche! - What a lifer!
Je ne vous dirai pas que j'ai raté l'hirondelle bicolore (la première vue en Islande) qui est passée à 10 minutes de la maison quand j'étais à Manchester, non non! Je vous dirai en revanche que j'ai eu la macreuse à ailes blanches (vue 14 fois en Islande) vendredi soir (ce fût la 73ème espèce de l'année, la 127ème en Islande et la 354ème sur ma liste) sur Bakkatjörn. Cela fait un moment qu'elle tourne autour (vue en vol), mais elle est assez difficile à voir.
L'histoire se passe ainsi. Vendredi 19h, la famille se met à table. À 19h10, un de mes amis m'apelle:
Lui: "Chris, la macreuse à ailes blanches est sur Bakkatjörn".
Moi: "Euh suis à table avec la famille, je ne pense pas venir".
Lui: "Euh comme tu veux, mais elle est difficile à voir et elle ne va rester que quelques minutes".
Moi: "Ben ce sera pour une prochaine fois".
Lui: "T'es sur, tu n'auras peut être jamais l'occasion de la revoir sur le lac".
Moi: "Ben, tant pis".
Je raccroche et bougonne, et là ma douce et tendre, attentionée ayant compris de quoi il s'agissait me DIT: "File, tu vas pas la rater, je m'occupe des enfants ;-)". Merci chérie.
Là, je rappelle mon ami et lui dit: "J'arrive masi ca me predm 20 minutes, garde là".
La voiture fût rapide ;-) Et quand je suis arrivé, elle m'attendais et figurez vous que mes amis n'étaient pas descendus de la voiture pour prendre des photos, de peur de la faire partir avant que j'arrive! Incroyable non! Ce fût une belle coche avec une belle histoire (merci les amis ;-)) et, j'ai eu le temps de faire 10 photos avant qu'elle ne s'envole, 15 minutes après mon arrivée! Voilà les photos, très retaillées encore une fois, car elle ne s'est pas trop approchée.
Concernant les espèces vues, avant de voir celle-ci, j'ai rajouté sur la liste annuelle la phalarope à bec étroit (71), le bécasseau sanderling (72), donc la macreuse à ailes blanches (73) et le canard chipeau (74) aujourd'hui. La saison est partie sur les chapeaux de roue, j'accumule les photos et n'arrivent pas à suivre le rythme ;-)

I will not tell you that I missed the tree swallow (first one seen in Iceland) that landed only 10 minutes away from home when I was in Manchester, no no! Instead I will tell you that I got the white-winged scoter (seen 14 time in Iceland) Friday evening at Bakkatjörn and that it was species number 73 this year, (the 127th in Iceland and the 354th on the list). It has been seen there for a while but only flying around and hard to see.
The story starts like this. Friday 7PM, the family started to eat. 7.10PM, a friend called me:
Him: "Chris the white-winged scoter is at Bakkatjörn".
Me: "We are eating, I don't think I will come".
Him: "As you want, but it is hard to see and it will only stay few minutes there".
Me: "Well that will be for next time".
Him: "Are you sure, you will never have a better opportunity to see on the lake".
Me: "Well, that's life".
Our conversation ended and I started wondering if I should not go. My wife, who had perfectly understood the matter, just then looked at me and said: "Run, you're not gonna miss it this time, I'll deal with the kiddos" (thanks Honey).
So I called him back saying that I'm joining but that it willt ake 20 minutes. They had to keep it around ;-)
The car has never been that fast ;-) and when I arrived it was still there. And my friends did not go out of their cars to take pictures as they were afraid it will go away before I arrive! Incredible! It was a nice lifer with a nice story and I only had time to do 10 pictures before it flew away, 15 minutes after I arrived (Thanks to my pal for that one). Here are the pictures, highly cropped as it did not come too close.
Bird numbers, now, I've reached 74 by adding the red-necked phalarope (71), the sanderling (72), the white-winged scoter (73), and today the gadwall (74). The season has started like crazy and I'm totally overloaded with pictures and running after birdies ;-)

70 en deux jours - 70 in two days
Et voilà que la saison démarre sur les chapeaux de roues. Après avoir atteint 64 espèces la semaine dernière, je me disais que cela allait mettre un peu de temps pour atteindre les 70!! Et bien non... La saison a démarré plein pot. En deux petites sorties, hier et aujourd'hui, j'ai pu rajouter sur la liste annuelle (dans l'ordre), la sterne arctique (65), le traquet motteux (66), le bécasseau variable (67), le courlis corlieu (68), le bécasseau maubèche (69) et le canard souchet (70). Je n'ai pas de photos de tous ces oiseaux, mais de quelques uns ;-) Pire, la lumière est revenue ;-) et les sorties en soirée se multiplient, tout comme le nombre de photos. Encore pire, cela fait deux jours que les flocons de neige nous accueillent au réveil (mais ils ne restent pas sur le sol ;-) ). Bref, la lumière est de retour tout comme nos amis à plumes. La saison photo se précise donc, même si je pars dimanche à Manchester pour un meeting d'une semaine. En fait de fin mai à mi-août, je ne vais rester que 3 semaines sur le sol islandais. En attendant voici les quelques photos prises ces deux derniers jours, en espérant pouvoir revenir vers fin mai pour laisser un autre message ;-).

Well, the season has now really started. When I reached 64 species last week, I thought it will take some time to reach 70! Well not at all. In two days, today and yesterday, and two small visits to some birding spots, I added on the year list the Arctic tern (65), the Northern weathear (66), the dunlin (67), the whimbrel (68), the red knot (69) and the Northern shoveler (70). I don't have pictures of all of them, but some. Worse I can say ;-), the fantastic light is back, and the evening hobby (running after birds for photography) is going at full speed, such as the filling-up of my hard disk ;-) (look like I was stressed not to get pictures ;-) ). Even worse than worse, the last two mornings we got snow flakes when we woke up... Well anyway birds and light are back, so the photography season is now starting full speed, even if I'm leaving to Manchester on Sunday for a meeting of one week. Indeed from end of May to mid-August, I'll be travelling a lot and will only stay 3 weeks in Iceland. But for the moment, enjoy the first pictures of the REAL birding season.

Tous les ans, j'attends avec impatience notre voyage à Mývatn, car celui-ci me permet de voir des espèces que je ne vois pas Reykjavík. C'est le cas du grèbe esclavon. Cela fait 2 ans que je me dis: "C'est pas possible, il doit bien en avoir aux alentours de la capitale". Alors, j'ai décidé de rejoindre "Ebirds" et de chercher les endroits où le grèbe esclavon était régulièrement observé en Islande. Et là, j'ai trouvé un lac à 15 minutes de la maison. Je suis donc allé hier soir au lac Urriðavatn hier soir, et l'ai découvert. Tout simplement superbe, il y avait beaucoup d'espèces et j'ai pu rajouter le grèbe (62), le fuligule milouinan (63) et la barge à queue noire (64) sur la liste annuelle. J'ai même vu un canard à front blacn, espèce rare ici. Je vais y retourner quand la météo le permettra avec pour objectif de faire des photos avec les petits. Il ne faut juste être patient.

Every year, I'm eager to travel to Mývatn area because it is a good occasion to see species I don't usually see in Reykjavík. This is the case of the Horned grebe. But since 2010, I've been thinking: " Well there should be some around Reykjavík". So I decided to join "Ebird" et to look for location where it had been seen around the city. I found a lake just 15 minutes away from home called Urriðavatn and I went there yesterday evening. It was a wonderful place and the grebe (sp. 62) were there (at least a couple). I also added to the year list the greater scaup (63) and the black tailed godwitt (64). I even saw a rare American wigeon. I'll definitively go back there and I hope to catch the parents with the youngsters.

Me voilà encore à écrire un message 15 jours après le précédent, le temps file... Je les cumule. Après le pied, le vaccin de la fièvre jaune (que j'ai du faire à cause de mon voyage en juin) m'a mis K-O. Mais bon, ca va mieux maintenant. Pourquoi la dernière? Voilà maintenant 4 ans que je suivais ce petit gars sur la rivière Úlfarsa. La dernière fois que je l'ai vu, le 20 avril, il était sur la berge et ne bougeait pas, malgré la présence de ces copains fuligules morillons sur l'eau. Puis après une heure à attendre patiemment qu'il daigne bouger, un ami m'a rejoint. Après 15 minutes, il (le canard hein) a essayé de quitter la berge, essayé, je dis bien... C'est alors que je me suis rendu compte qu'il avait une patte cassée! Depuis, je ne l'ai pas revu! Je suis un peu triste car c'est comme si un ami m'avait quitté. Chaque printemps, j'attendais son arrivée avec impatience. Attendre l'arrivée dðun oiseau rare fidèle à son "patch" de visite était un réel plaisir... Je ne l'ai pas vu non plus ce soir...
Well, still 15 days since I've written a message, time flies.. This time, after the foot surgery, it is the yellow fever vaccine that got me (I need to do it for my trip in June). I'm better now ;-) Why the last one? I have been following this duck for 4 years at the river Úlfarsa. The last time I saw it, the 20th of April, he was seating on the river bank and was not moving despite the rpesence of tufted ducks on the water. I waited for an hour and was then joined by one of my pal. Then, 15 minutes later, the duck tried to move, I said tried, because then I realised it had a broken leg. Since the 20th, I've not seen him again. I'm a bit sad cause it is just like if a friend had gone missing. I've been waiting every spring to see this rare bird come to my patch, and he is probably gone for ever now. I did not see it tonight neither.

Aller positivons. Nous revenons d'un long week-end en chalet ;-) Nous sommes allé à Hreðavatn, l'occasion pour moi de voir le plongeon imbrin (61ème esp. de l'année), dont voici quelques photos. J'en ai même vu 4.
Well try to stay positive. We went in a summer house for this long week-end. We went to Hreðavatn and I knew I would then have the possibility to take pictures of the great northern diver (common loon). It was the 61st species of the year. I saw four of them on the lake.
