----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The day before my departure was booked for a trip to Pipeline road, one of the best place for bird watch in Panama. The record of observation is above 400 species. We rent a car with a birding pal and went there. We walked for 7 and a half hour but only saw a bit more than 75 species. Here are some pictures of some of them. I'll finish the Panama tour in the next message with the visitor center of the Canopy tower where we stayed an hour after our walk on Pipeline road.

Amazone à front rouge - Red-lored amazon

Trogon à queue noire - Black-tailed trogon

Pic ouentou - Lineated woodpecker

Toucan de Swainson - Chesnut-mandibled toucan

Piaye écureuil - Squirrel cuckoo

Moucherolle rougequeue - Ruddy-tailed flycatcher

PS: Because lots of you asked, my camera is still in repair (there was a long waiting list). The camera can be fixed without any problems. We are more worried about the 300mm lens. All the optics have tilted and they are not sure they can fixed it. If they do that's gonna cost me 900 euros, otherwise, I have no lens anymore!!!

#15 phil, 2012-09-10 15:03 Some weird and wonderful tropical birds you found there Chris - just the total opposite to our European stuff. Your toucan shots are very, very good. Lots of mipits, wheatears and pink-feet arrived this weekend. Phil Citer

#12 Evita 2012-09-08 21:55 Hello Chris

How wonderful that you are enjoying some beautiful and very warm no doubt time down south :) These tropical birds are exquisite! I love the woodpecker...here at home we have what I guess would be its cousin....the Pileated Woodpecker. They are huge and look very similar...beautiful birds!

And sorry to hear about your camera being broken....guess what mine too! This is why I haven't been active on my photo site as I took some this summer with my iPhone....but as good as it is, it is just not the same....so picking mine up in a week from repair and will be excitedly capturing new scenes :)

Have a safe and pleasant rest of your trip!

#7 Lowell 2012-09-07 12:07 Bonjour Chris! I guess I haven't been keeping up as I did not know about your camera problems. What happened? Good lenses are soooo expensive.

Have you read about a new type of flat lens - it has been developed by people at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Should be revolutionary. It refracts light without bending it and will be very light. Supposed to be on the market within a few years.

Love the birds in this post, esp. the toucans!

Hope your weekend is filled with fun and photography!
